JING ZI JIAO SALT FIELDS TOURIST CENTER

Tainan, Taiwan 2022

In the past, the salt industry played a significant role along the southern coast of Taiwan, and the Jingzaijiao Tile-paved Salt Fields in Beimen, Tainan, with its unique tile-paved salt fields of about 6 millimeters thickness, have become the only salt industry landscape in Taiwan recognized as a historic site. Inserting man-made order into a flat natural landscape, the future visitor center draws inspiration from the salt terrain, enhancing the contrast between natural and human-made orders, and providing service functions for the distinctive salt fields. The architecture stands like a pile of crystallized salt amidst the old salt fields, echoing the mosaic-like industrial landscape. The larger volume serves as a specialty shop, while the smaller one contains offices and toilets. The two volumes are connected by a cloister that aligns with the texture, and the horizontal extension not only visually echoes the expansiveness of the western coastline but also provides shade for visitors to rest and receive education. On specific holidays, market activities can also be held. The entire attraction starts with a view of the salt fields from the base of the cloister, using the paving to connect facilities such as the crystallization pool, evaporation pool, brine pools of varying heights, and observation deck. After people finish their visit and return to the base, they can pass through the specialty shop before leaving.
